Film Theory Documentary

  1. Focus: Analyze the research question, film selections and how well it was addressed with examples from the film.
The interesting opening to the documentary was very relevant to the student’s question and allowed the audience to clearly understand what the student was going to be talking about. The question was addressed very well, he choose examples in which really supported his claim about how ideologies of the time period influence the film especially the characters. The student used the example of Mike TV having different interest from TV to video games to reflect that shift of the generation, this was very well explained as “metaphorically representing today’s youth”, which further supports his research question.
Structure: Examine the structure of the documentary- 3 focus areas with 2 examples for each: Did the examples illustrate their thesis?
The examples used fully support the student’s thesis and are clearly portrayed. The student does well in his areas of focus, such as his statements on characterization, he goes into depth about the protagonist and several other characters, is he even brings out why these characters are shaped they by comparing all the children’s persona to show how Charlie’s humble traits are emphasized, this also eventually adds to the sub plot of the film. Lastly the student also portrays much detail in the overall messages of the film and addresses theme of the original film as well as the remake.
Research: How was research incorporated into the doc? Are their claims supported with evidence or expert testimony?
The research can be seen in the general research of the film such as conveying the origins of the film and naming specific dates of when the film first came out.

  2. Hi Ryan,
I really liked your topic and your topic is generally interesting! I had never really considered the films similar except for the actual depiction of the story but both do convey emotional themes of the greediness of society and whatnot. I really was interested in how you analyzed the metaphor of the machine that takes them in the sky as something much more and how it’s open’s his narrow perspective. Your focus was well defined and your comparison between the old film and the new film reveal the perception of a changing audience especially with the two main evil characters that represent the superficial youth! Well done!

  3. Hey Ry Ry
I really loved these films, in fact Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the film I have seen the most times in a theater. I really like your analysis, and I could clearly see thematic analysis from your research shown. The social aspect of these films, as well as the extent of the racism, had never truly dawned on me, enlightening. The juxtaposition of this societal analysis, comparing how the films came from different societies of different time periods is a very interesting topic to me and I thus enjoyed the video. Furthermore this analysis does cover the research question, although broad, I think it plays to the analysis's strengths. The visuals are nice and of a high quality, and varied. The nature of this film and analysis are not cinematography based and therefore I feel the use of film language as adequate. However I felt that the narration could have been better, more exciting to really pull the KO punch to this documentary. Great job and I hope to see what comes next.
